Lybrel is the first oral contraceptive designed to be taken 365 days a year with no pill-free intervals. Lybrel works the same way as other combination birth control pills work by preventing ovulation from occurring. This pill contains low doses of synthetic progesterone (levonorgestrel) and estrogen (ethinyl estradiol). Lybrel is intended to prevent pregnancy, thus most side effects of the pill are not serious. The most common such effects are nausea, vomiting, unscheduled bleeding, weight gain, breast tenderness, and difficulty wearing contact lenses.
