HEART BURN

After eating, a discomfort or pain occurs in the chest. Heartburn or pyrosis is a painful burning sensation in the esophagus, just below the breastbone. The pain often rises in the chest and may radiate to the neck or throat. Heartburn is also identified as one of the causes of asthma and chronic cough.

What Causes Heart Burn?

Heart burn is caused by a faulty muscle in the stomach. There is a flap at the top of the stomach that stops food from traveling back up into the esophagus. Sometimes the flap doesn't work properly and stomach acid escapes from the stomach. When the acid escapes, heart burn occurs. The other factors that contribute to heart burn are:

  • Pregnancy,
  • Smoking,
  • Eating large meals,
  • Being overweight, and wearing tight clothing around the waist.

What are the treatments of heartburn?

The goal of treatment is to lower acid levels as much as possible so that you are symptom-free throughout the day and night. Returning to your regular quality of life means your treatment has been successful. Treating heartburn also reduces the risk of damage to the lining of the esophagus that can be caused by high levels of acid in the esophagus.

Medicines used for treating heartburn are those that reduce acid production in the stomach, neutralize stomach acid, create a barrier between stomach acid and the lining of the stomach and esophagus, or help the stomach to empty the contents more quickly. As well as non-prescription products are used on a short-term basis for infrequent mild heartburn. If heartburn is more severe and it is not controlled then it can cause serious complications. In such situation, seek the help of doctor and your doctor can determine what's the exact reason of heartburning.
